Why affiliate pins need a disclosure

The FTC's endorsement rules apply to Pinterest the same as everywhere else: if you earn money when someone buys through your link, that connection is material, and it has to be disclosed clearly wherever the link appears. “Clearly” is the part people get wrong — a disclosure buried at the end of a long description, or hidden behind the truncation point, does not count. Put it at the start, in plain words.

What counts as clear — and what doesn't

#ad and plain sentences like “I earn a commission if you buy through this link” work. Vague tags the FTC has specifically called out — #sp, #collab, a bare “thanks [brand]!” — do not, because a reasonable reader can't tell money changed hands. When in doubt, say the actual thing.

The Amazon-specific rule

Amazon Associates adds its own requirement on top of the FTC's: the exact statement “As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases” must appear where your Associates links live. That is why every Amazon option above includes it verbatim — paraphrasing it is the mistake that gets accounts flagged in program reviews.

Where to put it on Pinterest

For affiliate pins, the description is the place — early enough to be visible in the feed, not after three paragraphs. For ongoing brand deals, Pinterest also has a paid-partnership label you should use in addition to (not instead of) the written disclosure. If affiliate content is your main lane, our guide to Pinterest affiliate marketing covers the full workflow — and PinGrow's affiliate pin tools can write the disclosure into every generated description automatically.

This tool offers general guidance, not legal advice — rules change, and your program's terms are the final word.
